Political Fund

The law says that unions must have a separate political fund to spend on political campaigning. This could include a newspaper advertising campaign in support of public services, lobbying for better legal rights for workers, calling for support for the Fire and Rescue Service or holding a rally to improve health and safety protection.

Members chose whether or not to contribute through a political levy.

The FBU’s political levy is currently about 15p a week.

The elected Executive Council (EC) decides how the money is spent. The EC is accountable to members through Conference and ensures that when money is spent a clear benefit can be seen for FBU members.

FBU members voted in a ballot in October-November 2004 to renew the Union’s political fund, and so helped make sure our workplace campaigns – NO2 Fire Deaths, our IRMP strategy, the battle for members working the retained duty system, the fight against regional controls and the protection of our pensions – can be taken into the political arena, in Westminster, Brussels, on local councils and the devolved parliament of Scotland and the Northern Ireland and Welsh Assemblies.
